An unhealthy trash can

Okay, I’ve made myself focused on one and the most intuitive interaction between a person and a foot-paddled trash can, which is stepping over the paddle and then, the lid of trash can opens. At this moment, a person can actually see that the can is filled with smoke and hear the can smoking and coughing. Obviously, this is a pretty unhealthy can. The smoke is generated by dry ice and the sound will be trigged based on the light sensed by the photocell.

When the lid closes, the can has already been set up filled with smoke so people who are standing next to it may identify the case and probably wanna open the lid to see what is going on inside.

Until the lid opens, the sound of coughing will be played from laptop due to the light changes sensed by photocell (actually, the sound needs to come from a bluetooth speaker attached to the can). It is a silly idea but when smoke meets the sound of coughing, the combination of these two definitely leave an impression of being unhealthy.

The idea is to push people care more about trash can though this presentation is kind of abstract and ambiguous. The trash can is for collecting trash but still we can throw trash into can in a gentle way. I’ve found that a lot of people won’t follow the rule of trash classification though it is clearly labeled on each can. I may just wanna add some sound and visual effects to draw people’s attention on trash cans and may treat them a little bit better than they did previously.

Please don’t throw snipe into a trash can!

Manifest: an Audio Installation

Manifest is an installation I made for our Audio Readymade assignment.  Two bookends with carved portraits of American Indians hold up a selection of books that face the participant.  When any book is removed, a track that showcases a modern representation of American Indians suddenly begins playing.  Replace the book, and the track pauses, waiting for you to re-engage.  The collection of books becomes a synthesizer of our complicated cultural associations.  I used photocells talking to a Max patch to provide the audio.

GossipCam, continued

We decided to continue with–and improve upon–the gossiping security camera that Ken and I started working on for the first assignment to make the camera look and sound girly and gossipy.

…and soon it will become more girly and ridiculous (we’re thinking sparkles and pearls). We’re also working on taking the (printer/packing sniffing) code we worked on for the last assignment and appending gossipy quotes for GossipCam to say aloud.

Short Story/ Character background:

Zoe was interested in being a security camera from a young age. She noticed the field was super male-dominated and macho early on, and, as a young security camera, she tried to fit in by wearing all black and cutting her hair short. As a young, shy camera, she didn’t want to draw attention to herself.

As she grew older, she became more confident and more disillusioned with the work she was doing. She started embracing her inner girliness: pink, pearls, sparkles! She made some other realizations, too: she realized she was bothered by the fact that these people she was watching didn’t know everything that she knew about them, and she also became a bit jealous that she and her security camera friends were always watching others, but the attention was never on her.

She started whispering about what she was seeing–quietly at first–and found, to her pleasure, that this engendered interest and attention. She kept going, quit her day job and she’s now a proud YouTube and SnapChat personality, “GossipCam”!

Rocket Toaster

I’ve been hacking together parts to create a toaster that believes it’s a rocket. Unsurprisingly, there is not a lot of space available inside the cavity of the existing toaster. Ideally I want it to continue functioning as a toaster, even with it’s added personality.

I imagine that the sequence begins with placing toast in the machine as you normally do. A  subtle orange glow emirates from the bottom, like the one from the heating element. As the toast continues to cook a low rumble can be heard. As the rumble begins to grow the glow seems to ‘short out’ and return with a bright fiery hue and flicker. A countdown begins and the toaster smokes through the bottom. 5, 4, 3, 2, the flickering and rumble grow, 1…suddenly the toast is ejected skyward and the toaster flashes back to normal.

To communicate the toaster’s aspirations I plan on using:

  • LED Strip within cavity of the toaster that casts a glow out of the enclosure
  • Bass shaker which exaggerates deep rumbling sounds. Like a rocket.
  • Some type of smoke/fog generator
  • Method of accelerating toast departure into the next dimension*

Tests So Far:

LEDs: Doing some things with Arduino is painful. Working with LPD8806 strips is one of them. I’ve considered trying out FadeCandy and controlling the strips with my computer. Likely I’ll forgo that added complexity for this version of the Toaster.

Bass Shaker: These little speakers do nothing more than rumble. But it’s a really satisfying rumble. You’ll see them a lot attached to seats in theme parks and movie theaters (you know, the XTREME!™ theaters with 25 dollar tickets so you can get water sprayed in your face in sync with the movie). They need a hard surface to vibrate. I’ve tried the metal of the inside of the toaster but it’s significantly more effective attached to the table. Really a fun effect.

Speaker: Using a real amp this time to power the bass shaker on the left channel and a mono speaker on the right.

Toy with Embedded Fog Generator: I bought a Fog Blaster off amazon and ripped it apart. The actual part that makes fog heats Propylene glycol a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) fluid (aka Rosco Smoke). I’m amazed by how this thing works. I’ll just say it has a tendency to shoot hot liquid at you. The trigger in the toy usually pumps the liquid toward the heating element. I’ve attached a small air pump to do that for me.

The main problem is the smoke rises and I want it to come out of the bottom of the toaster. Testing with a plastic bag to redirect the smoke has been promising.

Challenges:

Getting everything inside. I’m considering moving to a 4 slice toaster and removing two of the slice acceptors.

Temptations

What may first appear as a typical box of decadent cupcakes, is in fact an interactive audio installation.

We are exposed to temptations on a daily basis, be it food, alcohol, sex, fashion and other materialistic objects. Until we come in contact with these short-lived pleasures, we are blissfully unaware of their existence. However, one we become witness to such things, they become desires we crave. Our cravings are met and suddenly that powerful emotion that eats away at us disappears and we loose our sense of satisfaction.

This installation is a metaphor for such temptations. Each of the cupcakes sounds seductive whispers, tempting the audience to take a bite. These whispers slowly die out as each cupcake is consumed, until no cupcakes are left, leaving the audience with silence.

Here’s some photo-documentation of mounting the electronics of my “schizophrenic” broom inside its bristles (Arduino Uno, ADXL335 accelerometer, Adafruit passive infrared sensor, and BlueFruit EZ-Link breakout). Data from the accelerometer and infrared sensor are sent by bluetooth serial communication to Max for audio manipulation.
